Skipjacks report -
February 2008
The new calendar year has begun on a high note for the
Skipjacks with the opening event being Max Sciacca Day. We
had over 60 members on the greens at the Sporties including
three new members - two of these are novice bowlers, having
just completed their coaching with George McCartney.
Max, one of our Patrons presided over the presentation of
trophies which he donates every year. We are very fortunate
to have Max as a member and Patron.
North v’s South, the first round of the annual challenge was
conducted at Forster B.C. on 10th February with
nearly sixty players taking part, considering the other
events happening around town this was a great rollup, of
course the game was duly won by the North side.
The event calendar has now been distributed among the
members with a full year of social and championship events
scheduled, below is a summary of forthcoming games. Yum
Yum’s bakery did not continue their sponsorship this year,
for various reasons, However, Jonno Wilson of John Wilson
Oysters has stepped in to fill the void which is gratefully
appreciated, and his event will be held on the eighth June,
thank you Jonno.

History of the Skipjacks
The Skipjacks were first formed in
1962 and known as the Forster Tuncurry Memorial Services
Social Bowling Club. 1968 saw a name change to Skipjacks
through a competition with a prize of one pound. The skip
and the jack being integral elements of bowls, and a fish
known as a skipjack is the reason for their logo of a fish.
The Skipjacks are the longest and largest continuous social
bowling club in Australia - a distinction they are proud of.
They compete for cups and shields against other clubs in the
Manning Zone and outside of it with trips away to Beresfield
and South West Rocks.
To be a Skipjack is to be part of a unique organisation.
Currently there are about two hundred members enjoying the
benefits of being a Skipjack.
